About Us
Our History
On October 26, 1985, a hit-and-run drunken driver killed 20-year old University of Texas student Christi Lanahan. Christi’s parents, Susan and Don Cox, and their son, Sean, found little affordable support available to help them in their grief. The Cox family needed help daily and realized that there were many others who also needed help. In October 1987 they established For the Love of Christi.
Our Community
Our members include a wide cross-section of all ethnic, economic and social groups, as well as individuals with a range of disabilities. We serve children, teens and adults, businesses, criminal justice agencies, civic and service organizations, schools, universities, churches and other community groups.
The Christi Center
Most of our meetings and programs take place at the Christi Center, located at 2306 Hancock Drive in Central Austin. We have made this renovated house into a warm and nurturing home, an ample space filled with comfortable furniture and welcoming staff and volunteers. From the front porch swing to the children’s art studio, the Christi Center offers a safe haven for our community.
WarmLine Telephone Support
Our office hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm. During those times you can call us at (512) 467-2600 and we will help by providing special caring contact, offering encouragement based on our empathetic understanding of the grief process. These are not counseling sessions, but are instead listening sessions for those who simply need to “unload” their hurt and concern in a non-threatening environment.
Support Meetings
Sharing your story with those who have a similar need is often the best way to begin healing. Our programs include support group meetings for children, teens and adults. These meetings are free, but we do ask you to call us at (512) 467-2600 before your first meeting, so we know more about you and your loss and can better serve your needs. By attending a meeting, you become a member of For Love of Christi. There are no membership dues.

Events
We have found that people who are grieving are often afraid that their loved one will be forgotten. They may find it hard to enjoy holidays and special occasions again, because they feel that they are not honoring their loved one.
For the Love of Christi offers our community special occasions that encourage social interactions with those who have taken the same journey of grief. These special events offer a meaningful way to acknowledge our loved ones and share the language of grief and healing.
